Audi invented the premium hatch when it launched the original A3 in 1996. The car was developed from the ground up on the basis of the Golf IV platform, which followed in 1997. Now, this successful premium compact is available in a choice of 4 body styles, 4 powertrains, & 3 trims.
The Audi A3 has consistently been the most well-rounded model in the entry-level luxury car segment. That's down to its appealing blend of style, performance & creature comforts that, until recently, was tough to beat. The third generation of the A3 was launched under the cloud of the cancelled 2020 Geneva Motor Show.
Cabriolet - When it comes to convincing small convertibles, the A3 is an intriguing choice. The Cabriolet loses a pair of doors along with its roof, but thankfully it doesn't give up much of its already limited boot space. Still, you'll have to pack smart & keep in-cabin personal effects to a minimum, so this might not be the best choice for you if you regularly have lots of things to transport around.
Saloon - If you’re after one of the best interiors in the class, the A3 saloon is worth a look due to its premium features. Its boot adds day-to-day practicality & a little more individuality but the sloping roof means headroom in the back is worse than in the Sportback.
Sportback - The Sportback has long ruled the family hatchback roost when it comes to interior fit & finish, as well as being quiet & comfortable to drive. It’s always been pricier than most, too, though, so if money is a consideration consider other options in the class.
Like all Audis, expensive options can quickly bump the ticket up but even the base specifications are pretty comprehensive & generous. The main rivals are the rear-wheel-drive BMW 1 Series, the more visually attractive Mercedes-Benz A-Class & the cheaper enemy within: the Volkswagen Golf MkVII. The 2020 Audi A3 ranks well in the luxury small car rankings, with its well-equipped cabin & a range of powerful engine options, but most of its rivals offer more boot space.
“Each generation of A3 has represented a significant step-change not only for Audi but also for the premium compact class. Our new model is no different & continues to be a torchbearer for Vorsprung durch Technik – it’s fully digital, completely connected & highly intuitive.”
