Make your van more secure, without spending a fortune!

It's a question that every van driver asks themselves, so we decided to present a few simple ways you can secure one of your business' key assets. Vanarama Content Editor Tom Roberts reports.

We understand that leasing a van makes driving one an affordable and convenient thing to do, but we also understand that you'll be using it to carry around your tools and other important items – this means you want security. But what are some of the easy ways to keep your van and its contents safe? Glad you asked…

1) Empty your van at night

This is the most obvious, but also the most important. Insurance policies often cover your van alone, not its contents. But it's the contents that can be the most difficult to replace. Keep your tools somewhere safe overnight, and you'll be scuppering a thief's plan right from outset.

2) Choose a van with security options

Most modern vans come packed with safety and security features – some more than others – so always take a look at the standard spec to see what it already comes with. Extras can always be added, such as an alarm, deadlocks, or an immobiliser.

3) Take a look at some cheap security measures

If you don't want to spend too much on security, there are some affordable options in the shape of steering locks, handbrake locks, deadlocks, and even a sticker indicating that no tools are kept in the van overnight can deter thieves.

4) Think about where you park your van

Driveways are a great place to park, because on-road parking could be around the corner from where you live. Why not install some motion-activated lights outside your house too? If someone does approach your vehicle, they'll be lit up like a Christmas tree.

5) Modify the interior to suit you

Storage solutions come in so many shapes these days that there's bound to be something that make security even easier. Removable wracking to easily carry your tools in and out is just one idea. But what about lockable tool storage, fitting some slam locks on the doors, or simply purchasing a lockable metal box to hide paperwork inside a secret storage bin?
