Why Lease A BMW 8 Series?
What’s The Cabin Like?
How Does It Drive?
The 8 Series is a long and wide car. It offers acres of space for its occupants up front, but the back row is less accommodating. Climbing into the back of the 2-door Coupe and Convertible can prove tricky, and the steeply raked rear windscreen limits headroom for taller adults. Children will have no problem getting comfortable in the back, however, although we recommend you look at the 4-door Gran Coupe if you are regularly going to have rear seat passengers.
The wide door bins, big glovebox and useful central armrest all offer plenty of space for odds and ends. And a wireless phone charger is situated in front of the gearlever, which connects to the infotainment system.
For a sporty vehicle, the boot is surprisingly spacious, carrying between 350 and 440 litres of luggage, depending on the body style. This is better than coupe-only rivals such as the Lexus LC and the Aston Martin DB11, while being comparable to 4-door rivals like the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door coupe.
The BMW 8 Series can be had with 3 petrol engines and 1 diesel, which is equipped with mild-hybrid technology. The 320hp diesel is impressively economical for such a big and heavy car, offering up to 44.1mpg. The 340hp 6-cylinder petrol manages 34.4mpg on the combined cycle.
The 530hp M850i exacts a hefty toll at the pumps – 26.4mpg on average is the price you pay for its impressive performance. And the range-topping 620hp M8 Competition isn’t too much worse, consuming 25.4mpg. All variants fall into the highest 37% benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax bracket.
8 Series CoupeA 2-door 4-seater coupe. Boot space is among the best in its class.
8 Series ConvertibleA 2-door 4-seater body style with a retracting fabric roof.
8 Series Gran CoupeThe most family-friendly 8 Series, the Gran Coupe has 4 seats and 4 doors with decent boot space.
The BMW 8 Series Vs Competitors
BMWs are reliable vehicles backed up by a comprehensive dealer network and a 3-year warranty on all new cars. The 8 Series in particular has done well in owner and reliability surveys.
The BMW 8 Series offers 440 litres of boot space in Gran Coupe form, 420 litres as a Coupe and 350 litres as a Convertible. This makes the Coupe by far the most practical in its class. The Gran Coupe is competitive too, but is slightly down on the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes AMG GT 4-door.
The BMW 8 Series is available in M Sport, M Performance and M8 trims. While there are some minor visual differences, the main differences here are that each trim gives you access to ever-more powerful engines. For the most desirable extras, you will need to delve into the extensive optional features list.
Every BMW 8 Series comes equipped with front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera too, which allows you to place your car accurately in even the tightest parking spots.
The BMW 8 Series is quite practical for its class. Boot space is generous and there are plenty of storage solutions in the cabin. The rear seats are a bit tight for adults, and accessing them requires some degree of flexibility in the Coupe and Convertible.
No. The BMW 8 Series isn’t offered with an electric drivetrain. However, the 840d is equipped with a diesel engine that incorporates mild-hybrid technology to help lower its consumption figures.
