The Ford Transit Custom is a state-of-the-art mid range van and is now the product that every other contender in this segment fears. With a much-improved cabin and car-like driving manners, it's a great ownership proposition. Class-leading carrying capacity and solid financials make it work on the balance sheet too.
There’s no getting away from the fact that by far the most important update made to this Transit Custom in recent times lies with the installation of a fresh range of 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engines which, as well as being much more efficient, it offers 20% more pulling power through the gears. If you’re familiar with previous versions of this van, you should notice that pretty quickly out on the road. There’s a choice of 105PS, 130PS and 170PS outputs, the latter two available with a new Selectshift 6-speed automatic transmission. Expect running cost returns in the 40 to 45mpg combined cycle bracket and CO2 readings in the 165 to 180g/km range - which is very class-competitive. If you want to do better, Ford offers a super-frugal ECOnetic version of the 105PS model.
As ever with this model, handling through the bends is impressive, thanks in part to the torque vectoring system that Ford developed for its passenger cars. And there’s a useful 2500kg braked towing capacity too.
This revised Transit Custom has a smarter look that's based around a high-mounted trapezoidal grille and dynamic, slim headlamps. The cabin has been completely upgraded, with an instrument panel based on Ford's latest interior design philosophy which offers a user-centric layout influenced by consumer interactions with smart devices and tablets.
Flexibility when it comes to load-carrying practicality is of course a fundamental requirement of any van and Ford has done its best to nail that here. A favourite Transit Custom variant amongst Vanarama customers is the typical L1 H1 derivative with a standard wheelbase and roof heights, which is capable of carrying up to 6.0m3 of cubic capacity. There’s a load area height of 1406mm and a class-leading width between the wheel arches of 1351mm, plus a load area length of 2554mm. In all variants, you can increase your load area length by 517mm by making use of a useful flap in the bulkhead which allows you to push really lengthy items into the cab.
If you need something bigger in the Transit Custom range, a higher H2 roof height is available, as is a longer L2 wheelbase. Together, these two additions could potentially give you up to 8.3m3 of total capacity. The payload figures are class-competitive (up to 1530kgs in the L1 H1 model) and these readings will obviously be heavily influenced by the Gross Vehicle Weight you choose. There’s a choice of 2600kg, 2800kg, 3000kg, 3200kg and 3400kg series models, the longer L2 body shape is only available with the three weightiest options.
This Ford Transit Custom is most affordable when leased from Vanarama. Our 8 Point Price Protection Promise guarantees that you'll get the best leasing deal. For example, in the unlikely event that you find a better, equivalent deal elsewhere, we'll match it. Or you can have a full refund. And if something happens that means you might have to postpone your order or cancel it, we'll give you a full no-quibble refund.
So, is the Transit Custom the best mid-sized van you can buy? There's certainly no shortage of contenders for that accolade in a class characterised by strong competitors like Volkswagen's Transporter, Mercedes' Vito and Vauxhall's Vivaro. The International Van of the Year jury though, had no doubt on the matter, pronouncing this Ford as its winner by an enormous margin when this model was first launched. Their consensus was that this LCV had managed to set new standards in styling, driveability and load-carrying practicality. They also praised its car-like feel, its safety and its low running costs. In short, they liked it very much indeed. Will you? We think so, yes. Before this Ford came along, buying a van in this segment meant a balance of compromise between capacity, driveability and value. At the wheel of a Transit Custom, the need for such compromise vanishes.

Very well equipped vehicle, all the gadgets. Smart and professional looking inside and out.
Great van all round. Very comfortable and smooth. Only thing I’d say is you cannot get an 8x4 sheet in straight but you can on an angle. Other than that it’s the PERFECT van.
Was very impressed on the aquality of the van
Reliability - Too new to know but ok so far / Running costs - again too new to compare to old van but definitely not costing anymore / Value for money - more expensive van to buy, but is leagues ahead of the competition. Only disappointment was the floor in the back isn't ply lined as part of the ply lining kit. There is a rubberised/plastic floor liner fitted in the back but as its polished everything in the back slides around. I have ply lined the base and the problems we had are sorted. Would have paid extra to have this done. I LOVE MY NEW VAN! Thank you
