Maserati badge brings appeal.

  • There’s a lot of space up front in the Maserati Ghibli and the rear seats are heavily sculpted, creating an environment that’s wonderfully comfortable and feels pleasingly exclusive. This does mean the centre seat isn’t ideal for adults on longer journeys.

There’s a pleasing amount of storage areas dotted around the cabin – from an air-conditioned glovebox to a rear armrest that opens to reveal more storage and a couple of cupholders. The boot is competitively sized at 500 litres, which is only marginally smaller than you’ll find in a 5 Series or Jaguar XF.

  • Nobody expects a Maserati to be cheap to run, and the Trofeo and V6 models trade efficiency for strong performance – an expected sacrifice for any make or model of this calibre. The Hybrid model improves on that somewhat.

All models get a 3-year warranty with unlimited mileage, which means your lease deal will probably be coming to an end just as your security blanket does.

Available Maserati Ghibli Models

There’s just 1 Ghibli, a 4-door saloon. Engine choices are limited to the 2.0-litre hybrid, a 3.0-litre V6 or the Ferrari-derived 3.8-litre V8 fitted to the Trofeo model.

Maserati Ghibli vs Competitors

Most of the Maserati’s rivals are more conventional models – with the BMW 5 Series being the closest on paper. A Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers a more luxurious experience but lacks the charm of the Maserati.

And as a leftfield choice to start with, somebody leasing a Maserati Ghibli might also look at the Jaguar XF – which pits British presence against Italian style, but the Jag mixes it with triple-A driving dynamics.

  • It’s based on trusted underpinnings and has the backing of industry behemoth Stellantis – the owner of Vauxhall, Citroen and Fiat – so there shouldn’t be any quibbles over the 3-year warranty.

  • Although the 5 Series scores well across the board, the Maserati adds an exotic charm that’s hard to mimic. For that extra appeal and exclusiveness, the Ghibli is a solid choice.

  • Yes, the Hybrid model has a 2.0-litre engine with a small battery pack and motor to help out. Depending on what driving mode you’re in, this either marginally boosts performance or marginally improves fuel economy. There’s no plug-in hybrid currently.

  • The lowest-powered model, the Hybrid, still packs 330hp under the bonnet. 2 V6 models improve on that, while the Trofeo hits the heady heights of 580hp. That puts it into true supercar territory – able to hit 62mph in 4.3 seconds and continue beyond 200mph.

  • Yes, the Trofeo model has a 3.8-litre V8 petrol that’s derived from the Ferrari F154 engine, although there are some significant mechanical differences. In many ways, however, it’s the same engine you’ll find in the Ferrari SF90.
