Vanatomy: Why the Volkswagen Caddy is a winner with small businesses

The Caddy is Volkswagen's small van, and has been for the past four decades. Over that time, it's only seen four generations with the original version being sold from 1978 to 2003! The latest version – the Mark 4 – is the next step up from 2003's Mark 3 and it builds on everything that made the first one so good.

Auto Express described the Caddy as "a great all-rounder with few weak points", and Vanarama's customers are just as complimentary. David Bradley said: "Nice spec, clear dash, well laid out. It's far better than anything else in its class. Well done, VW. The Caddy is a pleasure to drive just like your cars."

HOW much room?!

There's loads, simple answer. The two wheelbase options offer users either 3.2m3 or 4.2m3 in the back, and the roof's not the highest you'll find on the market, but its maximum payload is around 860kg – more than competitive. Our customer Rudi Coe said: "I have to say the new Caddy is much better than I thought. Looks great, drives very smooth with more space in the cab than I thought there would be."

And that's the beauty of a compact van. Max length of load is 1.7m and you access that by a split rear doors or lifting tailgate. On the side is a 70cm sliding door as standard…but you can have one on both sides if you like.

Is it cost-effective?

Yes, it really is. The new Euro6 versions are ready to go now the emission standards are in force. VW's latest eco technology really does its job with option to improve emissions with AdBlue, or if you want to go full green, take a look at the BlueMotion versions of the van to benefit from super-low emissions and over 70mpg. Impressive. Stuart Elliott, one of our customers, commented: "A quality small van, sturdy handling and amazing fuel economy." He's not wrong!

And what about comfort?

In the words of Auto Express: "You won't find a better interior in a compact van than the VW Caddy's. Build quality is hard to fault and VW's usual clear, fuss-free design is in evidence."

Add into the mix a great driving position, comfy seats, some room to adjust the steering wheel and bags of storage, and you've got yourself a pretty neat package in the Caddy. Take a look at our deals.
