This isn’t your grandfather’s MG. These days, the longstanding British brand is part of the huge Chinese conglomerate SAIC – and much has changed. Instead of turning out racy roadsters and sporty saloons, it focuses on sensible family hatchbacks and SUVs, aiming to undercut more established competition by offering plenty for your money. The MG3 was one of its first models under this new ownership to enter the UK, and it remains the entry point to the range, costing less to lease than other supermins like the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo. It’s getting on a bit in terms of design and technology, but the MG3 still offers a smartly styled, well-priced and well-equipped hatchback package that even throws in a decent amount of driving enjoyment for good measure.

Why Lease An MG3?

Value-for-money is the obvious factor here, but there’s more to the MG3 than just its affordable price – even if that is one of its biggest plus points. While many affordable cars can look dull and be uninspiring to drive, the MG does a decent job in both these areas. It’s not a car that screams ‘budget’ to everyone as you drive past – nor is it one that you’ll dread taking out for a spin. What’s The Cabin Like?

Inside, the MG3 boasts a simple and clear cabin layout, with some attractive finishes to break up the dull grey plastic. Continuing the theme established by the exterior, it doesn’t look like a car that’s been built down to a budget – although on closer inspection you’ll find material quality isn’t quite up to the standard of newer and more expensive rivals. However, the generous level of equipment on offer makes up for that. There’s a touchscreen infotainment system in the middle of the dashboard, along with electric windows all round and LED lights – while stepping up to the 2nd of the 2 trim levels gets you cruise control, sports seats and a reversing camera.

How Does It Drive?

Under the bonnet, every MG3 gets a 1.5-litre petrol engine. It’s a little dated to be honest, without the turbocharging and mild-hybrid technology that has become commonplace even on small cars these days as manufacturers chase greater efficiency and lower emissions. Its power output of 107hp isn’t outstandingly low, but the lack of any turbo or hybrid boost means it has to be revved hard to get the best out of it. Once you are up to speed, though, the MG3 drives quite sweetly on twisty roads, with good weight to the steering and genuine agility. Its ride quality isn’t the best, however, and it can get noisy on the motorway.

Because the MG3 costs so little to lease, it ends up being compared to tiny city cars more than full-size superminis. And in that context, it’s simply one of the most spacious cars you can get for the money. In terms of both sheer size of the boot and passenger compartment – as well as the provision of in-cabin storage cubbies and cupholders – it acquits itself well. The 285-litre boot capacity is right up there with supermini class leaders, and it can be extended to a useful 1262 litres by dropping the back seats down. If maximum space for minimum outlay is a priority, you should look very closely at leasing an MG3.
The MG3’s outdated petrol engine does it no favours here, with about 43mpg fuel economy the best you’re likely to see. In the real world, it’s likely to be less and that’s because the 1.5-litre petrol engine needs to be worked hard to deliver its performance. On the plus side, you’ll be paying less to lease an MG3 in the first place than you would be for pretty much any of its competitors. And insurance and servicing costs are also pretty low – so you could very well find it all evens out depending on what sort of mileage you expect to be doing.

Although the British-owned MG of old was always associated with sports cars, in its new incarnation under Chinese ownership, the brand is focused more on sensible and well priced offerings, so there’s no hot-hatch MG3.

The basic MG3 Excite has a 6-way adjustable driver’s seat, a leather steering wheel, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, parking sensors, DAB, Bluetooth, air conditioning and all-round electric windows.

The MG3 Vs Competitors

On paper, the MG3 lags behind many of its rivals when it comes to refinement, efficiency and performance – but it all has to be seen in the context of its rock-bottom pricing. Depending on your priorities, you may find that leasing an MG3 represents a very good deal indeed compared to more loftily priced competition such as a Honda Jazz or Toyota Yaris which are more expensive due to their hybrid engines.

The MG3 is manufactured by a huge Chinese company that puts out millions of vehicles a year, using solid, simple and proven parts, so there should be no reliability worries. It also has a very long 7-year warranty.
