Fantastic cabin.

Plentiful space.

  • As you would expect, the BMW iX has plenty of space on board. The cabin feels light and airy, and the electric motors have made it easier for BMW to squeeze more room into a car with the same footprint as the X5. But while the front seats are more than roomy enough, the rear seats really impress. BMW has not fitted a 3rd row of seats, but the iX has lots of rear space, providing more leg- and headroom than is really necessary. But in that sumptuous interior, the space is nice to have.

The iX also comes with lots of boot space. A 500-litre capacity is useful – it’s about as much as you get in a 3 Series Touring (estate) – so few customers will have complaints. It’s more than enough space for a family’s luggage, shopping or school bags.

  • Because electric power is the sole option for iX customers, the BMW is unlikely to break the bank when it comes to running costs. For many, the most appealing option will be the xDrive50 M Sport, capable of up to 369 miles on a single charge – according to official figures – despite its power output of more than 500hp. Driven carefully, the iX might top 300 miles between visits to the plug.

Company-car drivers will love the ultra-low tax rates afforded to all electric vehicles, including the iX. Although other, less upmarket electric models might come cheaper, the iX is significantly easier on the wallet than the X5, or anything else which runs on fossil fuels, which has this much power, luxury, space and technology.

The iX has a wide range of rivals, including some more conventionally powered alternatives. Perhaps the closest rival is the popular BMW X5, which is less futuristic and less striking to look at, but handles well and comes with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Other alternatives include the clever Audi E-Tron, offered with cameras in place of door mirrors, and the newer, aerodynamic Mercedes-Benz EQS. There will also be an electric Range Rover soon and, although it’s a little smaller, the incoming electric Porsche Macan may attract some admiring glances. So too will the relatively long-serving Jaguar I-Pace. More conventional options include the Volvo XC90, Range Rover Sport and Lexus RX, all of which are available with hybrid power.
  • BMW has a strong reputation for reliability and the iX has a simple electric powertrain. The car should prove reliable and BMW is backing it up with a 3-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

  • The iX has a 500-litre boot, which should be more than enough for the majority of customers. Some rivals have a little more space, but the iX will easily take a family’s luggage for a week away.

  • The simple iX range offers customers a choice of 3 specifications. There are Sport and M Sport versions of the xDrive40, but the xDrive50 only comes as an M Sport. Meanwhile, the range-topping M60 can be considered a trim level all of its own.

  • Yes, every version of the iX comes with front and rear parking sensors, and a rear-view camera as well.

  • The BMW iX is very practical. There’s a big boot with lots of luggage space and passengers have acres of room in which to stretch out. However, there’s no 7-seat option.

  • The iX combines all the qualities of a BMW luxury SUV with electric power and striking exterior design. It’s futuristic, spacious and beautifully made, with lots of equipment and technology as standard. And the big battery means it’ll cover plenty of miles on a single charge.
