Top 3 Features

Good electric range.

Impressive refinement.

Practical interior.

  • In the back, the iX3 has plenty of space. There’s lots of leg- and headroom for even very tall passengers in the outer 2 rear seats, while the centre-rear seat is wide enough that 3 people ought to be comfortable.

In the back, the boot is slightly smaller than that of the petrol or diesel X3, because of the need to package the rear-mounted electric motor, but it’s still very roomy at 510 litres and can be expanded to 1560 litres if you fold down the back seats. This can be done by tugging a handle just inside the boot.

Helpfully, there’s a small underfloor storage area in the boot that is an ideal place to keep your charging cables nice and tidy.

  • The iX3 comes with 1 choice of electric power and it’s a single 286hp electric motor mounted in the rear, driving the rear wheels. That draws power from a 74kWh battery, which on a full charge gives the iX3 an official range of 282 miles, which should be adequate for all but the longest of journeys.

For those longer journeys the iX3 is designed to charge quickly from a high-powered DC charging point. On a 150kW charger, the iX3 can add as much as 237 miles of extra range in 30 minutes.

The iX3’s rivals come from the expected premium brands – Mercedes, Audi and Jaguar. The Mercedes EQC is a similar size overall to the iX3 and has broadly similar electric performance. However, it’s not as enjoyable to drive. The Jaguar I-Pace is very handsome and excellent to drive, but its cabin doesn’t feel quite as well made as that of the BMW. Audi has 2 models that compete with the iX3 – the Q4 e-tron is slightly smaller and more affordable but has more electric range, while the e-tron quattro SUV has similar range to the BMW but has standard 4-wheel drive and more power. It’s also well worth considering the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Neither has the badge appeal of the BMW, but their electric performance is so good and their cabins are of high enough quality that it would be foolish to discount them as rivals to the iX3.
  • It should be. BMW has been carefully developing its electric technology starting in 2013 with the little i3 hatchback. The iX3’s electric tech is closely related to the i3’s and should offer solid reliability. Added to which the standard X3 is a reliable and well-made model. BMW offers a standard 3-year, unlimited-mileage warranty along with an 8-year, 100,000-mile warranty for the iX3’s battery.

  • The iX3’s boot has 510 litres of volume measured up to the luggage cover or 1560 litres if you fold the back seats down and stack it to the roof.

  • Yes. All iX3s come with standard front and rear sensors, and a reversing camera too. As an option, there is a 360-degree camera system with automated parking functionality.

  • The iX3 is very practical. There’s plenty of room for 4 tall adults to get comfortable, while the boot has a flat loading floor from the edge of the rear bumper that makes it easier to load large or heavy items. In the front of the cabin there are big cupholders, along with deep door bins and plenty of space for stowing small items.

  • It’s hard to resist the charms of the BMW driving experience. When that is combined with zero-emissions electric performance that’s as good as any rival’s, along with fast charging and useful levels of practicality, then it’s hardly any surprise that the iX3 is proving to be a popular electric choice.
