Recycled Plastic In Minimalist Cabin
Pleasingly Brisk Electric Power
An electric car brings with it some practicality advantages, and the Born’s flat cabin floor and lack of a transmission tunnel definitely helps with cabin space. Legroom in the back is enough to allow a 6-footer to sit behind someone of similar size in the front.
The boot holds 385 litres, which is 5 litres bigger than what you’d get in a standard VW Golf. It’s square and flat, and there’s only a tiny loading lip if you move the adjustable floor panel up.
In the cabin, there are 2 deep storage cubbies in the centre console and under the armrest, plus 2 cupholders. The door bins are also a good size. There are 4 USB-C sockets, 2 in the front and 2 in the back, for charging and connecting electronic devices.
The standard 204hp Born, with the 58kWh battery, has a claimed 1-charge range of up to 259 miles. If you want to regularly cover long distances, then there’s the option of a bigger (77kWh) battery, which extends the maximum claimed range to 340 miles. Borns with the 58kWh battery will charge up from an 11kW charging point in 6hrs and 15mins, while if you can find a rapid charger with 120kW power or better, it’ll fast charge to 80% capacity in 35mins. The 77kWh battery version takes 7hrs 30mins to charge from an 11kW charger, by the way. Cupra claims that the Born will cover 4.1 miles per kWh.
All Borns come with a standard 3-year, 60,000-mile warranty, which can be optionally extended to 4 years and 75,000 miles, or 5 years and 90,000 miles for an extra cost. The battery itself is warrantied for 8 years and 100,000 miles.
Cupra Born hatchbackThere’s only 1 body style of Cupra Born and it’s the 5-door hatchback. Your choices are standard 204hp motor or the 230hp eBoost model, and either the standard 58kWh battery or the optional extended range 77kWh version.

It should be and Cupra is backing it up with a decent 3-year standard warranty. Of course, it’s a new model from – effectively – a new brand, but the reputation of both SEAT and the wider Volkswagen Group is good when it comes to reliability, so we would be surprised if there are any major issues.
The Born’s boot measures 385 litres up to the parcel shelf or, if you fold the back seats flat, you get 1267 litres loaded to the roof.
Basic spec is a well-equipped V1, while if you upgrade to V2 or V3 models you’ll get larger wheels, the head-up display and heated seats.
Yes, all versions come with front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera. Higher-spec models get a 360-degree parking camera system.
It’s decently practical. The boot is bigger than a Golf’s, there’s plenty of storage space in the cabin, and there’s good leg- and headroom in the back seats. There’s also plenty of room in the back for 2 large child seats.
It’s a refreshing change from the understated VW ID.3, and Cupra is giving us an electric car that looks and feels sporty, with the promise of genuinely rapid versions to come.
