Strong build quality.

  • Practicality is one of Honda’s strengths and the HR-V’s cabin feels very spacious. The front seats have plenty of adjustment, lots of headroom, and generous rear space. There’s lots of legroom for those in the back, and headroom is ample despite the angle of the roofline and rear window. The car also comes with Magic Seats, which not only fold as normal but can also be flipped up to create a long, tall space where the rear passengers might normally sit. It’s especially useful for transporting taller items. Along with the range of cubby holes and cupholders, it gives the HR-V extra flexibility compared to rivals.

The HR-V also has a 319-litre boot with another 16 litres of ‘hidden’ boot space under the floor. That allows drivers to hide items from view if necessary, making the space more flexible. Fold down the Magic Seats and the boot space swells to more than 1,300 litres.

  • There is only one choice of engine, but it’s highly economical. It’s a 1.5-litre, 131hp petrol hybrid that can run on electrical power at low speeds, or when you lift off the accelerator to reduce fuel consumption while coasting or driving around town. That allows it to achieve 52.3mpg on the official economy test, no matter which version you choose.

The hybrid system is also good for company-car drivers, who will appreciate the relatively low 122g/km emissions rating. That will keep tax rates down compared with more polluting petrol- and diesel-powered alternatives.

Models Available

The only body style available to HR-V customers is a 5-door, 5-seat SUV. The sole engine option is the 1.5-litre e:HEV hybrid, which comes with an automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive.

The HR-V has a lengthy list of rivals, including the funky Nissan Juke and the futuristic Toyota C-HR, both of which are also available with hybrid power. Other rivals include the youthful SEAT Arona, the practical Skoda Kamiq, and the classy Volkswagen T-Cross. HR-V customers might also consider the much-improved Vauxhall Mokka, Citroen C3 Aircross, and Peugeot 2008. The Hyundai Kona is also among the appealing alternatives, but few can match the Honda for its quality and solidity, or the efficiency of its hybrid system.

  • Honda has an excellent reputation for reliability, and the HR-V will likely prove very dependable because it uses tried and tested components. It also comes with a 3-year warranty for extra peace of mind.

  • The Honda HR-V has a 319-litre boot that grows to 1305 litres when the rear seats are folded.

  • The simple HR-V range offers customers a choice of 3 trim levels. Basic Elegance models are joined by the Advance and the Advance Style versions.

  • Yes, all models of HR-V have front and rear parking sensors, and a rear-view camera.

  • The Honda HR-V’s boot is not especially large compared with key rivals, but there’s plenty of space for school bags or shopping trips. The cabin is more practical, with plenty of rear head and legroom, as well as Honda’s clever ‘Magic Seats’ that make it easier to carry tall items such as plants.

  • The HR-V merges Honda’s legendary reliability with cabin space and efficient hybrid power. It’s an appealing combination for anyone, from individuals to families.
