With new technology rapidly changing the way we drive, it is understandable that there is a great deal of interest around the range of electric cars and how far they can go on a single charge.
The answer to that question isn’t, unfortunately, the same for every car. The distance any single model will be able to travel will depend on the size of its battery, the power of its motor (or motors if you’ve got a 4-wheel drive model), how you drive and the conditions in which you drive it.
In many senses, that is no different to any petrol or diesel car – if you like driving fast or are used to running a car with a big engine then you’ll know that you won’t get as many miles per gallon as if you motor around frugally in a small car.
But what is also true is that there is now a huge range of electric cars to lease that will suit every taste and need. From small urban run-arounds like the Honda E or Mini Electric – that can comfortably do 100+ miles a week around town on a single charge – through to long-range machines with massive batteries like the Tesla Model S that can deliver close to 400 miles, electric car range is no longer the problem it was when the first models came to market a decade or so ago.
Electric Cars Are Going Further Than Ever Before
Those very first electric cars, which were very much prototypes that were there to prove the technology, couldn’t manage much more than 100 miles on a single charge.
To see how much things have improved over the last 10 years it’s worth comparing those early cars to their successors. It’s a visible demonstration of how engineers have stretched more and more miles from a single charge.
Take two cars that have played a massive part in the EV revolution – the Nissan Leaf and the Renault Zoe. The Nissan first came to market at the end of 2010 and boasted what was then an impressive range of 73 miles! Wind the clock on 10 years and the latest long-range version of the Leaf – the E+ model – can now deliver over 3 times that distance: 239 miles according the latest WLTP testing regime.
Renault’s little Zoe has a similar story to tell. It’s first 2013 version could deliver around 90 miles in city running. The latest top spec model – the Z.E 50 – has a 245-mile WLTP range.
So you can see that a decade has brought huge advances in range for even the most affordable electric cars and, what’s more, your choice has never been greater with many new models coming to market over the last year with ranges comfortably in excess of 250 miles.
What’s The Furthest You Can Go?
If you’re really hungry for miles and need a car that compete with some of the longest-range petrol and diesel models on the market, then there’s an electric car for you. Hugely popular models like the Kia e-Niro offer 282 miles range (WLTP) and if you’re looking for something from a premium brand then Jaguar’s I-Pace SUV or the beautifully crafted Polestar 2 both offer 292 miles of range.
If you want to go even further than you need to look to the most iconic brand in the world of electric cars – Tesla. Packed with as much as 100kWh of batteries (twice that of the biggest Renault Zoe), their cars can easily crack 300 miles on a charge with long-range options getting you up to 400 miles. And even the ‘base’ model Tesla Model 3 enjoys superb range from its 60kWh battery, thanks to the cutting-edge tech that means it deploys charge in as efficient a manner as possible to deliver maximum range.
