Vanarama Newsletter June 2014 - Van-zine

Published on Tuesday 10 June 2014 in Company News

The great British van driver has shown belief, grit, and determination, not to mention loyalty to the cause to make it through the recession. These qualities are abound once again; as England enters the joyous carnival that is the World Cup, you can't walk down the street without seeing England flag touting vans - and that's just in the Vanarama car park!

So, as the nation readies itself for the nail biting tournament why not take some time out to read about what's happening in the van world, including Vauxhall's part in the Whole Shebang.

England Manager visits Vauxhall to reveal World Cup squad as the manufacturer announces new Combo

As the country gives way to World Cup frenzy, team sponsor, Vauxhall, played host to England manager, Roy Hodgson as he announced the squad at the company's Luton HQ.

It was the second time Hodgson has visited Vauxhall's Luton headquarters and came at a time the company was making an announcement of its own - that it is adding a new, bigger Combo to its van range.

The new Combo L2H2 panel van is a high-roof, long-wheelbase version of Vauxhall's popular Combo van and comes as demand increases for a smaller van that can still easily carry a Europallet. The L2H2 offers an impressive load capacity of 5.0 cu m. Its overall height of 2125mm and length of 4740mm make it more spacious than smaller varieties and it has the same one tonne payload.

Offering a choice of two 1.6-litre diesel engines with 90hp or 105hp, the new Combo is due to go on sale later in the summer.

VAN INDUSTRY SHOWS WINNING WAYS - 100,000 vans sold in first quarter of 2014.

Every tenth vehicle on UK roads is now a Light Commercial Vehicle. As the cogs of the economy start to turn once again with more businesses, probably much like your own, choosing to invest in new wheels for their firm, this figure looks set to grow. In fact, the van industry has been celebrating as the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders announced that 100,000 new vans were sold in the first quarter of the year.

Registrations of new light commercial vehicles (up to 3.5 tonnes) totalled 100,537 at the end of April; this represents a healthy 12.2% year-to-date rise compared to 2013. The SMMT is now so optimistic about the market that it has upped its whole-year van sales forecast for 2014. It now predicts total sales of 301,320, a rise of 11.2% on 2013.

So, which manufacturer is winning the van popularity test? Here's a brief lowdown on which badge has the most winning ways. Ford takes first place. The American manufacturer boasts a 23% market share followed by Volkswagen with a 13.5% share of the market, Vauxhall claiming 10.5% while fourth-placed Peugeot has a 10.2% of the market with 10,251 registrations.

At Vanarama we like to keep abreast of developments in van technology. With 95% of all vans on UK roads diesel powered we're particularly interested to learn about advancements in future vans which will help cut carbon emissions and costs for you, the driver. That's why we were excited to hear about office services company, the Commercial Group, which has taken delivery of its first hydrogen hybrid van as it examines the technology's potential to reduce costs and carbon emissions.

The company will be using the new van to make deliveries across the capital as part of a three-year trial which forms part of the London Hydrogen Network Expansion (LHNE) project. The objective of the scheme, funded by the Government's Technology Strategy Board, is to grow the use of hydrogen-powered vehicles in London and the south east while establishing a network of publicly-accessible hydrogen fuelling stations.

The van is a hybrid - and runs on diesel if the hydrogen runs out, so there aren't any worries about range if the driver is not near a hydrogen refuelling station. It is being used by Commercial Group's office supplies division, which provides a next-day delivery service to customers.

As manufacturers compete to be the first to roll a hydrogen powered vehicle off the production line, it will be interesting to see how these hydrogen hybrid vehicles will operate in the real world. While there is much debate about the practicalities of alternatively fuelled vans - reducing carbon emissions is high on the political agenda - so no-one, including us here at Vanarama can afford to bury our heads in the sand on this one!
