Booming confidence in the building and related trades has led to a 17.5% increase in commercial vehicle registrations during February, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). What's more, Light Commercial Vehicles (that's vans and pickups to you and me), showed a 28.2% increase in registrations. Bearing in mind that's all happened before the March plate change the future for van drivers is looking rosy!

Ford Transit wins Arctic Van Test

Hot on the heels of the Winter Olympics, Ford proved to be the coolest contender at the Arctic Van Test - the Finnish magazine Auto Tekniikka ja Kuljetus's annual Arctic cold-weather van test, now in its 23rd year and the commercial vehicle industry's' Winter Olympics equivalent.

Vans were put through their paces by journalists in mind-numbing -50 degree C temperatures in Finland. Amongst the events were a 700km endurance drive and a slalom course on a frozen airfield. Judged on fuel efficiency, load carrying, driveability and handling, Ford reigned champion on the day. The Transit Connect and all-new two tonne Transit beat vans from Mercedes-Benz, Vauxhall and Volkswagen.

Market widens for eco van buyers with Nissan e-NV200

Van buyers who want to go green will have another van to choose from in June, when the Nissan e-NV200 goes on sale. The van combines the best of the battery-powered Leaf electronic car with all the best-selling NV200 van.

The e-NV200 has a range of more than 105 miles and can be quickly charged to 80% capacity in 30 minutes. The battery can also be recharged overnight using a domestic 16-amp single-phase 3.3 kW supply, or 6.6kW/32-amp supply for four hours.

Matching the 740 payload of the NV200, the 'e' version also has the same 4.2m3 load volume.

Citroen to unveil new Relay

Citroen will unveil the latest version of its Relay next month at the Commercial Vehicle Show. According to Citroen the updated Relay model, due to go on sale in the autumn, will offer class-leading payloads and one of the largest, most practical load compartments in its class. All the major model configurations, found in the current Relay, are expected to be included in the new range.

Updated Renault Trafic will arrive this summer

Renault's specialist van engineers have been busy producing the latest incarnation of the popular Trafic, the third since the model's introduction in 1980.

The new Trafic, is due to be unveiled officially in the summer, but Renault has already released some teaser images of what they are calling the new 'van a vivre', or van to live.

Outside we see a new front end, larger headlights and a more sloping windscreen. Meanwhile, the cabin has been designed to be as comfortable and user-friendly as possible. There will be no lack of choice with the new Renault Trafic. The range will allow for 270 different variants, with customers choosing between two different heights and lengths, as well as various body styles ranging from panel van to platform cab. Under the bonnet, the Trafic will get a range of downsized engines with turbochargers.
