How Does It Drive?
The Rio is about average in size for the segment and offers plenty of space for occupants up front. Adults will have no trouble in the back either, although legroom can be limited if the front seats are in their rearmost setting. The door bins in the front are quite generous and there is a well-sized glovebox, but those in the back will have to make do with 2 relatively slim door bins.
Boot space in the Rio is better than average, swallowing up 325 litres of luggage with the rear seats up. This is better than the Volkswagen Polo but trails the Renault Clio.
There are 3 petrol engines in the range. The base 1.2-litre petrol manages 50mpg, but we would skip it altogether and look at one of the 2 turbocharged 1.0-litre variants, as they offer better economy and improved performance. Thanks to a standard mild-hybrid system on these versions, you can expect around 52mpg in mixed driving, with the automatics being the more efficient. An added benefit of the mild-hybrid system is that it provides an additional boost when accelerating or driving up a hill.

The Kia Rio Vs Competitors
Kia as a brand is known for producing reliable vehicles. The Rio regularly scores well in reliability surveys, and it comes with an industry-leading 7-year/100,000-mile warranty.
Yes. The easy-to-drive nature of the Rio and its light controls make for a great first car. It is small and nimble, and higher-spec trims come with driver aids such as blind-spot detection and emergency braking assist.
The Rio can fit 4 adults without a problem. Headroom is good both front and rear – legroom can be a bit tight for long-limbed rear passengers, however. The boot offers a generous 325 litres of space. This betters the Ford Fiesta (280 litres) but trails the Renault Clio (391 litres).
The Rio range is not offered with a plug-in hybrid engine. Some variants do have mild-hybrid technology – however, this doesn’t allow for all-electric driving.
