Why Lease A Mercedes-Benz A-Class?
What’s The Cabin Like?
How Does It Drive?
Look at the numbers and there’s not much to get excited about with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, but it’s competitive against its rivals. The boot can swallow 355 litres of luggage, shopping or general family detritus, and the square shape and wide opening make it easy to maximise the use of the space.
Front passengers will feel very happy in the A-Class, with lots of space plus handy cubby holes and cupholders to store phones and wallets. The rear of the cabin is a little tighter, but only the very tall will find the room lacking. Legroom is excellent, as is the shoulder-room, meaning 3 people could squeeze in without too much discomfort.
Choose to lease the high-powered Mercedes-AMG A45 model and you’ll just have to accept that you’ll be paying more for the privilege of running a performance-oriented Mercedes. The everyday petrol and diesel models are much more frugal.
There’s nothing particularly advanced about the range of engines available, but they’ve been refined and tweaked to offer strong power, refinement and economy. Those wanting to maximise savings can also choose a plug-in hybrid version, the A250e, which can travel up to 45 miles in zero-emissions mode alone, meaning you may never touch a drop of petrol if all your journeys are short hops.
A-Class HatchbackThe model you’ll see most frequently on the road. It’s a conventionally styled 5-door hatchback that gains a premium aesthetic, thanks to that bold Mercedes grille.
A-Class SaloonFrom the nose to the middle it’s the same as the hatchback, but then transforms into a sleek 4-door saloon that looks like a mini-C-Class. The A-Class Saloon is a posh and practical alternative.
AMG ModelsA family hatchback with 421hp means fearsome performance, which is what the Mercedes-AMG A45 versions of the A-Class provide. The stability of 4Matic all-wheel drive and a fast-shifting 8-speed automatic gearbox make it easy to drive, though. The AMG A35 makes do with 306hp but, in daily driving, you won’t spot the difference in speed and you’ll save a lot on your monthly lease payments.
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class Vs Competitors
The regular hatchback can take 355 litres of cargo, which is 25 litres smaller than a Volkswagen Golf’s boot. This rises to 1210 litres with the rear seats folded away. The boot in diesel models is marginally smaller, at 345 litres, while the plug-in hybrid loses 45 litres to accommodate the battery. The boot in the saloon is larger at 405 litres, but the diesel and plug-in models of the 4-door are, again, slightly less generous.
Every model is fitted with a reversing camera offering a 180-degree view of what’s going on behind you. However, you’ll need to upgrade your lease package to Executive or Premium trim lines to benefit from front and rear sensors.
There’s nothing spectacular about the Mercedes-Benz A-Class interior space and boot capacity, but it’s competitive and very few people will find themselves complaining about a lack of room. Still, some touches stand out, such as 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats, providing increased flexibility over its rivals.
It’s easy to make a case for leasing the Mercedes-Benz A-Class as it’s got the cachet of the Mercedes badge, a practical and comfortable interior, is bulging with cutting-edge technology, and offers a drive that’s engaging and economical. It’s a cracking all-rounder.
