Loads of safety equipment across the range.

  • The Clio isn’t the most spacious car of this size, but it’s not cramped either. Taller adults may lack headroom in the back but otherwise it’ll house 4 adults, and 5 at a squeeze. For extra space, look at Volkswagen’s Polo, the SEAT Ibiza or Honda Jazz.

The boot, however, is massive, offering 391 litres of space. On top of that, it’s well thought-out, with a movable floor that lets you flatten the step between it and the bottom of the boot opening. This is very useful when hauling in larger, heavier items. The E-Tech Hybrid’s boot isn’t quite as big – its capacity drops to 301 litres because of the space needed for batteries. If you need extra space, you can fold the rear seats in a 60/40 split.

Up front there are big door pockets and a generous glovebox, as well as a handy storage area in front of the gearstick. Higher-spec models get a space under the centre armrest, too.

  • The E-Tech Hybrid model promises a fuel economy of up to 64.2mpg, which is a jump up from the 54.3mpg promised by the TCe 90 petrol model. The lower-powered SCe 65 model claims 53.3mpg. It’s worth noting that the Hybrid model will likely have higher leasing costs than the petrol Clios, so make sure you crunch the numbers to decide which will be best for you.

The Renault Clio Vs Competitors

The car all others of this type have to live up to is the Ford Fiesta and nothing can touch it for driving engagement. If you want fun in your car, then the Fiesta should be your first stop, followed by the MINI Hatch. But while the Clio isn’t exactly fun, it is a very well-rounded drive, and we think it’s better looking and nicer inside than the Fiesta. There’s no hybrid model from Ford, either. Other excellent all-rounders include the Volkswagen Polo and SEAT Ibiza. If you want something swankier still, you could look at leasing an Audi A1. And for a stylish French alternative, check out the Peugeot 208.

Finally, if you want something in the Renault family but are looking to move to a purely electric car, read our Clio vs Zoe article to see how they match up.

  • Yes. It’s a very solid all-rounder with a particular talent for boot space and style.

  • If you opt for the E-Tech Hybrid model, you could get up to 64.2mpg, but even the regular TCe petrol engine should manage well in excess of 50mpg. That’s pretty good for this type of car.

  • Insurance premiums will vary depending on your circumstances. The Clio’s insurance groups range between 3 and 16 (of 50), which means the entry-level models in particular will be very affordable.

  • The latest Clio is made in Bursa, Turkey.

  • Yes, it’s an excellent first car, particularly if you go for one of the entry-level models. They’re easy to drive, full of safety gear in case anything goes wrong, and very affordable to insure.

  • We guarantee that you’ll get the best monthly price, plus there is never any processing fees or hidden costs. We’re also rated excellent on Trustpilot for very good reason, and our experts will always be on hand to help you through the leasing process from start to finish.
