The new S-Cross is currently available in mild-hybrid form, with a 1.4-litre engine assisted by an electrical system. This allows the car to switch the engine off when coasting to a halt and adds a little more performance when pulling away. The most efficient version is the entry-level Motion model with front-wheel drive, which will achieve 53.2mpg on the official economy test. Even 4-wheel-drive versions manage at least 46mpg.
At present, the mild-hybrid engine emits 120g of CO2 per kilometre, which should keep company-car tax bills down. Soon, Suzuki will introduce a plug-in hybrid version that’s set to offer a short electric range and low emissions, as well as 3-figure official economy returns.
