The Mercedes-Benz Vito is a mid-sized van that knows its business. With 3 lengths, 3 weight variants, and 2 turbodiesel engines in 5 power ratings, this Vito offers a broad range of choice. You'll also get to pick from 3 trim levels - Pure, Progressive and Premium.
The big news with this modern-day Vito range is the option it offers of front-wheel drive, a format that comes mated to a 1.6-litre diesel engine borrowed from Renault's Trafic. It comes in two guises: there’s a base 109CDI model with 88bhp, but we’d highly recommend the uprated 111CDI variant, which ups power to 114bhp. For longer distance work, heavier loads or towing, you should turn your attention to the Vito models that carry forward the previous version’s mechanical layout – rear wheel drive mated to a twin turbo 2.1-litre diesel engine. There’s a choice of three models, the 136bhp 114CDI variant or a 163bhp 116 CDI derivative, which slots in just under the top 190bhp 119 CDI version. This top model gets a sophisticated 7-speed 7G-TRONIC PLUS auto gearbox that’s an option on the 116 CDI.
The face of this improved Vito has a chunkier, more robust look that takes its cues from the current Mercedes passenger car line up.
As for practicalities, well all versions of this Mercedes come with a choice of either 2.8 or 3.05 tonne Gross Vehicle Weight. Go for a standard 2.8 tonne front-driven variant and you’ll be able to haul up to 955kgs. A rear-driven Vito though, can do much better. You get an additional 3.2 tonne Gross Vehicle Weight option with this configuration and the result is the potential to carry a maximum payload capacity that could be as much as 1255kgs.
And loading capacity? Well, since Vito buyers don’t get a choice of roof height, this will depend entirely on buyers’ choice of body length. The shortest L1 body style gives you 5.8m3 of capacity and 2586mm of load bay length. Move on to the L2 variant and you get 6.3m3 and 2831mm of length. Finally, the L3 version gives you a spacious 6.6m3 and 3061mm of load bay length. But, there are 3 dimensions that remain the same for all Vitos. First, there’s a loading sill height of 557mm. Then, the loading bay height – 1195mm. And finally, the loading bay width – 1685mm from side to side or 1270mm between the wheelarches – just wide enough to slide in a europallet. In fact, the most spacious L3 derivative would easily allow you to fit three europallets in line inside. Talking of pallets, you can also fit one in through the sliding side doors – there’s one each side provided as standard.
Keeping costs down will be a major priority for potential owners, so it'll be good news for operators that the Vito's new engine line-up has become more economical and cleaner.
The higher engine outputs (116CDI and 119CDI) prove to be class-leading when it comes to fuel economy. Both outputs hold a combined 47.1mpg and release 158g/km in CO2 emissions.
As for this Vito, well with this improved model, Mercedes has at last showed itself to be really serious about the medium range van segment. You really can now consider an LCV bearing that famous 3-Pointed Star as a realistically-priced alternative to that Vauxhall Vivaro or Ford Transit Custom you might have been thinking about.
