Abarth’s roots go as far back as 1949, but the famous scorpion badge is best known for its high-performance Italian sporting cars including a speedy version of the modern-day Fiat 500.
In the Fiat 500 range, Abarth offers the standard Abarth 595 model, the Abarth 595 Pista, the Abarth 595 Turismo, & the Abarth 595 Competizione which all use diifferent versions of the same 1.4-litre petrol turbo engine.
How to choose between them? The base Abarth 595 model uses this engine in 145hp form, with the Turismo version offering a 165hp version. The next model, Competizione features an even more powerful 180hp engine.
At its lowest output, the 1.4-litre T-Jet turbocharged petrol engine will deliver 60mph in just 7.1 seconds to a top speed of 127mph. In the 180hp ‘Competizione’ version, those figures improve to 6.7s & 140mph. Amazing.
For a bit of fun, the engine uses an over-boost function which affects the amount of available turbo boost & is activated by a sport button on the steering wheel. The car is fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard or, on some models, the MTA semi-auto paddle-shift gearbox.
For Abarth enthusiasts seeking more speed & a sportier experience, there's the 124 Spider, which shares Mazda MX-5 engineering and draws from a model heritage that goes back to the ‘60s.
