Why Lease A Range Rover Velar?
What’s The Cabin Like?
How Does It Drive?
The Velar is lengthy for this type of car; it’s barely wider than the Evoque, but almost as long as the Range Rover Sport. This is great for interior space when compared to a lot of rivals, with lots of room up front and good headroom in the back, even if legroom isn’t quite as generous. It is possible to get 3 adults in the back, but it may be a bit of a squeeze in the middle seat.
The boot is larger than most immediate rivals. It’s a bit smaller in the hybrid P400e, because of the electrical equipment underneath the boot floor, but still very practical. It’s worth noting that the height of the car means the boot is quite high off the ground, just in case you’re regularly lifting in heavy luggage. The rear seats fold down in a 40/20/40 split to give you flexibility for loading in larger objects.
There’s plenty of storage space around the cabin, including a large glovebox and door pockets, 2 cupholders up front and a storage space under the centre armrest, as well as a tray on the dashboard behind the touchscreen.
With 4-wheel drive and considerable weight, fuel consumption in the Velar will likely be higher than you can get in other, less sophisticated SUVs. If you want the most frugal model then the plug-in hybrid will be your best bet, as long as you keep the battery charged whenever possible, and do mostly shorter journeys of around 30 miles or less.
Of the diesels, the entry-level D200 model will give you the best economy of up to around 44mpg, while the petrol models promise up to around 29mpg. These figures are based on lab-style tests, though, and you’ll be lucky to get them in real-world driving.
Range Rover VelarThere are 2 main, overarching visual styles to choose from. As well as the standard Velar, you can pick a Velar R-Dynamic, which has a sportier look, courtesy of different alloy wheel designs and a more aggressive bodykit. If you pick either a ‘plain’ Velar or an R-Dynamic, there are further trim specifications within each to increase the equipment count from model to model.
High Performance ModelsThere are no specific high-performance models of Velar, but if you want the quickest version then the P400e plug-in hybrid is the one to go for. Its petrol engine and electric motor give a combined power output of 404hp. That means a 0-62mph acceleration time of 5.4 seconds, which is well into sports car territory.
The Range Rover Velar Vs Competitors
Land Rover as a manufacturer doesn’t have a particularly great record for reliability and often sits in the lower half of independent reliability surveys. Unfortunately, the Velar hasn’t done much to enhance that reputation and hasn’t fared particularly well in such reports since its release in 2017. In fairness, many of its luxury rivals also score poorly.
The Velar has an impressively large boot space for this size of car. It offers 513 litres of capacity, which expands to 1250 litres if you fold the rear seats down.
You’ll need to decide on your preferred style of Range Rover Velar – standard or R-Dynamic – and then choose from S, SE or HSE trims. At the top of the Velar range is the Velar Edition model.
Yes, the Velar has front and rear parking sensors on every model, as well as a 3D surround camera to help with manoeuvring.
Front passenger space and boot capacity is impressive in the Velar, and while rear passenger space is adequate, some rivals have more legroom.
The Velar offers many of the attributes of the classic Range Rover – including the name – but with sleeker styling. It also has more road presence and more interior space than the smaller Evoque, but without going into Range Rover Sport territory when it comes to cost.
