What Does A Mazda MX-5 Lease Look Like?
Benefits Of Leasing A Mazda MX-5
The MX-5 is all about having fun. Whether you’re a casual driver or a diehard auto enthusiast, this is a car that’s bound to hit the mark – thanks to its combination of sprightly performance, agile handling and low running costs. It's available as a convertible too. No other sports car offers such a broad range of talents in such an affordable package.Mazda MX-5 Interiors
Mazda MX-5 Driving Experience
The MX-5 is a strict 2-seater with fairly limited luggage capacity. A conveniently-square shape and a large opening means that you can fit more in the boot than its modest 130-litre volume would imply – there’s room for a couple of carry-on suitcases or a quick trip to the shops. However, that’s still less than half the space you’d get in a BMW Z4 or an Audi TT Roadster.
It’s a mixed bag in the cabin. There’s no glovebox and no doorbins to speak of, but there is a cubby hole in the dash, and a lockable storage unit between the seats that’s large enough for essentials like your wallet and sunglasses. You also get a clever set of cupholders that can be clipped in 3 different positions around the cabin. With the roof up in the convertible, you also get a useful extra bit of storage space behind the seats.
Another benefit of the MX-5’s light weight is its fuel economy. We saw 36.9mpg in a week of enthusiastic driving in the 2.0-litre manual – which suggests that the official figure of 40.9mpg would be realistic with a bit more restraint. The 1.5-litre manual manages an impressive 44.8mpg, while the 2.0-litre auto returns 37.2mpg.

Mazda MX-5 Convertible
The classic MX-5 in 2-seat convertible form. Its traditional fabric hood is a doddle to put up – you can do it using 1 hand with your seatbelt on.Mazda MX-5 RF
Short for Retractable Fastback, this MX-5 is 2 cars in 1, with a metal roof that folds down at the touch of a button to transform it into a convertible. It looks good in either configuration and the solid roof provides better sound insulation – although its extra weight does fractionally blunt the performance and handling.Trim Levels
The Mazda MX-5 Vs Competitors
The MX-5 doesn’t have many direct rivals. The 2-seat Audi TT Roadster and BMW Z4 are perhaps the closest on paper, although neither are as affordable or as engaging to drive.
Move away from the 2-seater sports car template and some interesting options present themselves. The hugely-entertaining Ford Fiesta ST provides hot hatch convenience for a similar amount of money – the forthcoming Toyota GR86 promises rear-wheel-drive dynamics in an affordable, compact coupe. Meanwhile, the MINI Convertible offers a chic, open-top driving experience with enough room in the back for the kids.
Yes. The MX-5 has a strong reputation for reliability. The current model finished 9th in the sports car category of the 2020 Reliability Survey from What Car?, just one place behind the Audi TT and ahead of the Porsche Boxster.
Not much, if we’re honest. You won’t fit something like a pushchair or a set of golf clubs in the boot, but it’s fine for a midweek shop.
There are 2 trim specs available with the 1.5-litre engine, SE-L and Sport. If you want the 2.0-litre engine, you’ll have to upgrade to Sport Tech or GT Sport Tech.
All barring the entry-level SE-L models come with parking sensors. Sport Tech and GT Sport Tech also get a reversing camera.
The Mazda MX-5 is a strict 2-seater and its boot isn’t very large. There are, however, several small storage areas in the cabin, including a lockable central compartment.
The Mazda MX-5 has very broad appeal. It’s simple to live with and easy to drive for those who simply want to enjoy the wind in their hair. However, its keen performance and engaging dynamics will also satisfy enthusiastic drivers. Throw in low running costs and classic roadster styling, and you have a recipe for success.
