Why Lease A Ford S-MAX?
What’s The Cabin Like?
How Does It Drive?
Great as the S-MAX is to drive, that’s no good if it has the carrying capacity of a thimble. Fortunately, Ford has made this a practical alternative to the Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer and VW Touran. In 7-seat mode, you get 286 litres of boot space – putting the car on a par with superminis such as the Fiesta. Fold the rear-most seats down and you free up a much more impressive 965 litres (assuming you fill the car to the roof). Finally, folding all but the front seats away gives you a van-like volume of 2020 litres.
Passengers will also be content with the space on offer. Those in the middle row get plenty of room to play with, so carrying 4 adults will never be an issue. The 6th and 7th seats are more of an issue. They are just about big enough for grown-ups, but you’d never want to use them for long. Far better to leave them for occasional use or for carrying children. If you need space for 7 adults, consider the larger Ford Galaxy.
If you’re doing long drives, the diesel S-MAX is the one to choose. The 150hp engine will return more than 46mpg on the official economy test. However, the hybrid isn’t far behind, and that’s certainly the one to choose for those doing urban miles. Officially, the 2.5-litre, 190hp petrol-electric model will return 43.5-44.1mpg.
The hybrid is also the powertrain of choice for company-car drivers, with emissions of between 147- and 148g/km. That’s substantially less than the diesel models, which manage a minimum of 159g/km. By way of a comparison, those figures put the hybrid in the 33% tax bracket, whereas the most efficient diesel is in the 35% bracket. More powerful versions will hit the top 37% tax rate.

The Ford S-MAX Vs Competitors
Ford’s reliability record is so-so – but a few issues are inevitable when you sell that many cars. People keep coming back, so they can’t be too bad. If you’re worried, rest in the knowledge that leasing an S-MAX gets you a solid manufacturer warranty as standard.
The boot in the S-MAX is pretty big, measuring 286 litres with all 7 seats upright. In 5-seat mode, it’ll manage 965 litres – and that grows to a massive 2020 litres when you fold the middle seats down as well.
Just 3 trim levels are offered to S-MAX customers. The Titanium is solidly equipped, while the ST-Line gives the car a sportier edge. For luxury, choose the posh Vignale model.
Front and rear parking sensors are standard on every version of the S-MAX. The top-of-the-range Vignale model goes one step further with a reversing camera.
As with any good MPV, there’s plenty of room in an S-MAX. Not only is the boot big no matter how many people you carry, but there’s plenty of cabin space. Adults will find the rear-most seats cramped, but kids will have no issues.
The S-MAX is a brilliant car, and a brilliant family car as well. It looks after all the boring practical things most MPVs can deal with, but it adds a sporty edge – especially in ST-Line trim. This is a car that keen drivers can enjoy without sacrificing practicality.
