Mitsubishi launched the new version of its reliable L200 pickup truck in Bangkok and revealed that the UK will get it in 2019! Vanarama's Tom Roberts rounds up everything you need to know about this new version of the ever-popular L200.
The new Mitsubishi L200 is the latest version of a pickup truck celebrating its 40th birthday this year! It's been called a "complete overhaul" something we'll be taking a look at in this blog and covered in our latest episode of Loadspace.
Engineered beyond tough
The new Mitsubishi L200 features a revitalised design under the concept title "Rock Solid", which is not only really fitting, but also funny. The front of the new vehicle incorporates the new-generation "Dynamic Shield" front with a high engine hood line and proper beefy-looking lamps.
The body looks different, packing in some new curves and sharp lines, extended wheel flares and what feels like a few design choices coming from this "beyond tough" design concept they keep banging on about.
The interior of the cabin looks robust and at the top of the range, a bit of comfort is added to the vehicle by soft pad materials and stitching on the floor console, armrests and handbrake.
New 4WD modes
4WD models will be fitted with either Super-Select 4WD or Easy-Select 4WD, and both will benefit from new drive modes for better off-road performance.
Both 4WD systems use a new Off-road Mode which has GRAVEL, MUD/SNOW, SAND and ROCK (in 4LLc only) settings. When engaged, Off-road Mode integrally controls engine power, transmission and braking to regulate the amount of wheel slip – sounds good to me.
And finally, we have Hill Descent Control to help us tackle steep and slippery descents with a bit of confidence – get in!
Driver Assistance Systems
It's hard to find a new LCV these days that doesn't pack driver tech…the new L200 will be no different. Here's the ones that grabbed my attention:
Forward Collision Mitigation – a fancy title for a bit of tech which detects vehicles and pedestrians ahead.
Blind Spot Warning to help you avoid sideswiping another vehicle when changing lanes. It does this by detecting vehicles behind or at the rear quarter and alerting the driver with an "audible alert" (I'm not sure how it sounds) and a flashing light in your door mirror.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert which, in the same way, helps avoid collisions when reversing and blasts you with a warning noise.
Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System which despite having an incredibly long name serves the important purpose of reducing the number accidents resulting from improper use of the accelerator when moving off or reversing in car parks and other confined spaces.
When will the new L200 get here?
I had to ring Mitsubishi's press office to see if I could find out a concrete date for the L200's UK debut – I was told that the European spec will be 100% confirmed in Summer 2019, which means an end-of-year launch is on the cards.
