Peter Curtis runs Call for Aid, an emergency home assistance service for the elderly. As well as offering a pendant aid device, Peter's business also provides a maintenance service, helping the less able to sort out those small jobs around their homes. From changing lightbulbs to cleaning windows, Peter gets huge satisfaction from working for the elderly in his local area.
Why did you choose to go it alone and run your own business?
There's no getting away from the fact that we're all going to get old one day! It concerns me when I see older people not get the service they deserve, or pay over the odds for something. There are some amazing electricians and plumbers out there, but I saw a gap in the market for a general handyman (with a lower hourly rate!) who could help do those smaller jobs, like fixing a leaking tap or changing a plug. That's why I established Call for Aid. The added bonus of being my own boss with the flexibility that brings, is the icing on the cake.
How long has your business been trading?
I've been self-employed for eight years now and the business is going from strength to strength!
Do you have any tips for people who might be considering starting their own business?
Don't overthink things and go with your gut feeling if you are uncertain. I know that all decisions are important, but if you take too long over them you run the risk of losing out on opportunities.
What are your ambitions for your business going into the future?
The maintenance side of the business is flourishing. So now I want to grow the emergency pendant service in the local area, always with a focus on providing great deals for the elderly to give them safety and reassurance for a happier life.
How do you feel about starring in the Vanarama TV advert?
I got such a buzz out of doing it! To be honest, when I was first chosen I was a bit nervous, but I persuaded myself to give it a go and really loved the filming. Like anything, if you step out of your comfort zone you will generally reap the rewards.
