It seems incredible that the BMW i8 hybrid supercar was introduced almost 6 years ago. It's proof of just how far ahead of its rivals it was that, even now, there's still no other car on the market like it.
Due to this, its 2020 facelift didn’t really require many facial changes but the hybrid supercar is now capable of delivering a 374hp punch if provoked. Alternatively, it can glide noiselessly along on purely electric power with an even greater all-electric range.
With its butterfly doors and bold, sculpted body, there’s no doubt that the BMW i8 turns heads on the high street. and unlike most supercars, the BMW i8 comes with 4 seats which help make it surprisingly easy to live with. Sure, there isn’t space in the 154-litre boot for your dogs and cats but it’s bigger than the offering from the Audi R8. There’s also plenty of space in the BMW’s front seats for you to get comfy if your legs are usually too long for cars in its class.
This low-slung, all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid sports car has a 129hp electric motor powering the front wheels and a 220hp, 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine driving the rear. Combined output is 357hp, good for a blistering 0-60 mph run in 4.2 seconds, according to BMW. Its all-electric range reaches around the 20-mile mark before the petrol engine kicks in, and its total range is around 310 miles.
The i8 is the supercar for people seeking something different, yet still with the ability to turn heads and the ability to attack corners. Of course, the Porsche 911 remains one of the most iconic cars ever made and continues to excite and thrill drivers with every iteration, but the i8 offers something different, very different. Its hybrid powertrain combined with a cutting edge design delivers a truly modern mid-engined sports car. Let’s not forget that it’s fun to drive too.
And, while the i8 isn’t alone in being a hybrid sports car, the Honda NSX goes without plug-in technology, while the Porsche 918 Spyder and McLaren P1 cost several times as much. Overall, the BMW i8 is a futuristic supercar that proves environmentally friendly hybrids needn’t be boring.
“With the latest eDrive technology and intelligent energy management, the award-winning BMW i8 Coupé with its iconic design is a truly revolutionary vehicle. Boasting a turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, which accelerates from 0 to 62mph in just 4.4 seconds, and the unique LifeDrive architecture for sublime weight distribution, it delivers a new sense of freedom.”
